(Fire) safety first and a brand new cooker

I wanted to share a positive story with you all! I was contacted by one of our Electricians, who had concerns about one of our residents and asked if I could visit him. 

When I went to see him, one thing that really caught my attention was the way he was cooking. He was using a hob on top of a microwave, and on one occasion, he forgot it was on and ended up burning his kitchen cupboard. 

Naturally, I was concerned about his safety and asked if he thought a proper cooker might be a better option. I also asked if he had the means to purchase one himself.  

Our resident opened up and shared that he was financially worried, as he was transitioning to Universal Credit soon and wasn’t sure if his benefits would be enough. A cooker was the last thing on his mind, but he said he’d love to have one if possible.

I spoke to him about the support options available, and with the help of our Tenancy Sustainment Team, his application to our Support Fund for an electric cooker was approved. 

Just a few days later, the cooker arrived, and on my next door knock, our resident couldn’t wait to show me his new appliance. He was so happy and even invited me to take a photo to share his excitement. 

He is truly grateful for the support we provided, as he had no idea PA Housing was there to help in this way. 

A big thank you to everyone who made this possible. 

P.S. The kitchen cupboard repair is also in progress — I haven’t forgotten about that!
