Ending your tenancy

If you decide to move out, you’ll need to give us at least four weeks’ written notice, but it's important you check your tenancy agreement to confirm your notice period as they can differ.

You can send your notice by email or by post, but please make sure it includes your full address and postcode.

Hand in your notice by email

Write to us with your notice

If you choose to email us, your notice must be sent from the email address registered on your My PA account. If that’s not possible, please send us a signed letter, either by email or post.

Unless you have power of attorney, you cannot give notice on behalf of another person.

Before you move out

To help make your move as smooth as possible, please make sure you:

  • Pay your rent in full, up to your tenancy end date.
  • Complete any outstanding repairs that are your responsibility.
  • Return all keys, including communal door keys and garage or fob access.
  • We’ll write to you to confirm how to return them.
  • Replacement charges may apply if all keys are not returned.
  • Clean the property and remove all belongings and rubbish, in line with your tenancy agreement.
  • Pay any outstanding utility bills in full.
  • If possible, please let us know your utility supplier and final meter readings, as this helps us prepare the home for the next tenant.

Death of a resident

If you are clearing a home on behalf of a relative who has died, let us know and we’ll help you through the process.

We’ll need to charge rent while you still have the keys, so letting us know as soon as possible is important. Remember if your relative received housing benefit, the Government stop that payment immediately so the sooner you let us know, the sooner we can help.

If you lived with the deceased resident at the time of their death and the home is your only and main property, you may have the right to take on their tenancy. Ask us, and we’ll help you understand if you are eligible.

Joint tenancy amendment

If you have a joint tenancy and wish to leave your home, you must let us know. You are still responsible for all the tenancy conditions, including payment of rent, if your name is on the agreement.

If both tenants are happy to have a name removed from the agreement, then we’ll sort that paperwork out. Both parties must be in agreement though, so if only one of you wishes to give up the tenancy we’ll have to give you notice to quit.

If you're in rent arrears, your name can not be removed from a joint tenancy until the account is cleared in full.

Domestic abuse

If you are moving out due to domestic abuse, please view on domestic violence section for further information.

Temporarily moving out

There may be times when you need to leave your home for a long period of time but will be returning. For example, you may need to go into hospital or to go abroad.

You must tell us before you go, and give us some idea when you think you will be back. You must also tell us if someone will be staying in your home while you are away and what arrangements you have made for paying your rent. If rent arrears build up while you are away, they are still your responsibility.
