Winter electrical safety

Background hex pattern

Winter is when we rely heavily on electrical devices to keep warm and cosy, but it’s also a season when electrical safety becomes crucial.

Here are some key tips to ensure you stay safe:

1. Inspect your heating devices

  • Space heaters: Ensure they have an automatic shut-off feature if they tip over. Keep them at least three feet away from anything flammable.
  • Electric blankets: Check for any signs of wear and tear. Avoid folding or tucking them in tightly, as this can damage the internal wiring.

2. Avoid overloading outlets

  • Power strips: Use power strips with surge protectors to prevent overloads. Never plug multiple high-wattage devices into a single outlet.
  • Extension cords: Use them sparingly and never as a permanent solution. Ensure they are rated for the intended use.

3. Be cautious with festive decorations

Be cautious with festive decorations

  • Lights: Use lights that are certified and consider replacing them with LED lights. These cost less to run, last longer, and are more wear-resident than halogen bulbs. Inspect them before using them for frayed wires or broken sockets.
  • Outdoor decorations: Ensure they are rated for outdoor use and keep connections off the ground and away from water.

4. Practice general electrical safety

  • Unplug devices: When not in use, unplug devices to prevent potential electrical fires.
  • Childproofing: Use outlet covers to prevent children from inserting objects into outlets.

5. Know the signs of electrical problems

  • Flickering lights: This could indicate a problem with the wiring.
  • Burning smell: If you smell burning or see scorch marks around outlets, turn off the power and call an electrician immediately.

What to do if there’s a power cut in your area?

  • Remove all appliances, such as hair straighteners and irons. Once the power comes back, they may turn on by themselves.
  • Call 105 to report a power cut to your distribution network operator. Calls are free from any network. You can call 105 for information on power cuts in your area and to report power cuts or damage to electricity power lines and substations that could put you or someone else in danger.
  • Check on your neighbours. If the power cut continues, you might want to check on your neighbours, especially if they are elderly or ill.
