For families undergoing major home renovations, particularly to essential spaces like bathrooms, the process can be really disruptive. This is even more so when vulnerable children are involved, as was the case with a resident I recently worked with.
In such circumstances, the decision to temporarily move a family to a hotel while work is carried out may seem like a viable option, but it often comes with its own set of challenges.
For children who are highly sensitive to change, particularly those with autism or sensory processing disorders, any disruption to their environment can cause distress, behavioural difficulties, or even adverse health effects. In this case, while the resident was eager to begin essential bathroom renovations, it was equally important to make sure that the children stayed in their home environment where they were comfortable. Preserving this consistency, even amidst the disruption of renovations, was vital to safeguarding the children’s emotional and physical wellbeing.
I contacted the resident to advise that we'd identified a suitable option that would enable them to stay in their home while the renovations were carried out. To support this, I sent over a brochure outlining the features and benefits of the bathroom pod – allowing them to review the details and assess whether it would meet their needs.
The resident was eager to proceed as this solution provided the best means of staying in their home during the project. From there, the next step was to arrange a start date with the contractor and confirm the schedule to ensure the pod was installed a few days before the start of the work. All the work was then completed successfully within 10 days.

The following quote from the resident highlights just how successful and well-received the pod was:
“I found the pod so helpful. I have 2 children with special needs who would not have handled having to move out while the work was carried out. The pod saved me from the stress and the boys could carry on being here with minimal disruption. Only problem now is my boys want to keep it as their own personal bathroom!”
The installation of a bathroom pod on this occasion allowed this family to maintain their daily routine without the disruption and unpredictability of a hotel setting. It offered them the comfort of staying in familiar surroundings while keeping their privacy, security, and full control over their home environment. Having a pod in this instance also proved to be a more economical solution compared to moving the family to a hotel for several weeks – especially when considering additional costs such as food and transport.
