One of the issues our Safeguarding team deal with is hoarding, so let’s learn more about hoarding disorder and how our Safeguarding Officers (SGOs) can help you, someone you know, or your neighbour who may be struggling with hoarding. We will also explore local support available near you.

We are here to help

The PA Housing Safeguarding team is made up of specialist SGOs who are here to protect and help you, our residents. They are here to ensure vulnerable residents are kept out of harm, cared for and not exploited or abused. They are empathetic, patient, and entirely non-judgemental individuals who care and are here to support if you or someone you know is struggling.

The SGOs work closely with Neighbourhood Coordinators (NCs) who on regular visits within the local neighbourhood will recognise and raise safeguarding concerns. The SGOs also collaborate with other internal teams such as Tenancy Sustainment, who offer financial and welfare support and can help you understand what benefits you may be entitled to. Additionally, the SGOs work alongside external local agencies such as social services, police, health, etc. to address the complex/multiple needs of residents that are vulnerable or at risk of harm.

Understanding hoarding

Hoarding is a recognised mental health disorder characterised by persistent difficulty in discarding possessions, regardless of their actual value. This behaviour can lead to significant clutter that disrupts the living environment, posing health and safety risks. Safeguarding residents with hoarding tendencies requires a compassionate, multi-faceted approach that addresses both their mental health needs and their living conditions.

Symptoms include emotional attachment to possessions, distress over parting with items, and allowing clutter to interfere with daily life and relationships. These behaviours can lead to social isolation and increased risk of accidents, fires, and health issues.

Building trust and engagement

In cases of self-neglect, including hoarding, we have a duty to intervene to ensure your safety as a resident and advocate for further care and support. Nobody should have to live in neglectful and unsafe conditions, and we know shame can sometimes stop you from seeking help.

Our SGOs are not here to judge you or your situation, they are here to support you to live in a safe, risk-free environment. So, if you need time to trust them, they are patient and ready to help when you feel comfortable. Trust is crucial and our SGOs create a safe space for individuals to discuss their behaviours and feelings.
