You Said, We Did: Cleaning up and friendly conversations at Upper Temple Walk

Residents at Upper Temple Walk told us they weren’t very happy with the condition their estate was in, so we held a Neighbourhood Action Day on Wednesday 25 March to tackle the issue.

Two of the areas from our Tenant Satisfaction Measures that we know we need to push to improve further are listening and acting upon your views and making positive contributions to neighbourhoods. So, when we heard the complaints that residents had been making about fly tipping and stray trolleys from nearby supermarkets being left around the area, we knew we had to do something about it.

We had actually already planned some doorknocks for that day to carry out some consultations around CCTV, which meant that the Neighbourhoods team was ready for action. Alongside this, we had some helpful colleagues from our Safeguarding and Estates teams to provide support and equipment once we’d scaled up our plans for the day.

Our teams arrived and got to work straight away from 10am to 3pm, tackling one problem area at a time.

  • We made sure bin stores were tidy, organised and free of any bulk rubbish and obstructions
  • Any runaway trolleys scattered around the area were collected, stacked together and brought to a contractor we partner with who returns them to their natural habitat… supermarkets
  • We scoured the grass with litter pickers and not one piece of litter was safe! The team didn’t stop until the estate was spotless, from path to grass
  • As some contractors were also onsite to supply us with litter picks, we flagged any areas of grass that needed some TLC for grounds maintenance to come back and trim

And throughout the whole day, those initial doorknocks were ongoing so Neighbourhoods could speak to residents and get their views on the work we’d been doing so far.

“You guys have done a good job,” one resident told us during a chat. “It looks really nice!”

It makes us feel incredibly proud as an organisation when we’re able to get positive feedback like this on the outcomes we deliver for residents, and especially so when it’s so soon after the action is completed. It gives us some real evidence that we’re able to make sure your voices are heard as much as possible and build happier neighbourhoods overall.

We’ll continue to hold Neighbourhood Action Days like this in future to target more specific issues that your neighbourhood may have, so keep an eye out and keep us in the know on which areas you’d like us to work on!
