Work experience to Employment

Work experience leads to full time apprenticeship

The Hill Group and the Laurelwood Place (formally Thames View House) project team have been working closely with local schools/colleges in Walton-on-Thames and the surrounding area to promote careers in the industry and provide opportunities on the Laurelwood Place project.

One of the ways we have supported local students is the rolling placement agreement we have established with Brooklands College in Weybridge. The Hill Group have provided 1 week placements for students studying at the college giving them the opportunity to enhance the skills they’ve been learning at the college, and apply these to a live construction project.

We’ve had further success with one carpentry student being offered an apprenticeship having impressed our subcontractor during his work experience placement.

Harry is 16 years old and lives in Walton-on-Thames, and after seeing his dad working in the industry he knew an apprenticeship would be a great fit for him. Harry spent one week on the project with  J’ L O’Rourke & Sons.

They were so impressed with Harry and his work ethic and motivation that after completing his work experience J’L O’Rouke offered him an apprenticeship!

Harry works 4 days a week at the Lauelwood Place development and still attends Brooklands college once a week on an apprenticeship framework and will be working towards a Level 3 qualification.

I've enjoyed it at the Laurelwood Place project, from the kind members of staff to the hardworking trades on site. I 've learnt so much from being here. I'd like to work hard and become and qualified carpenter and one day become a manger on site.
