Government Support

There are several different schemes that have been announced, so we’ve created this quick summary of what is available with the relevant links to help you apply.

  • Cost of Living Payment - If you claim certain benefits or tax credits, you may be eligible for an extra payment to help with the cost of living. There will be further payments made between spring 2023 and spring 2024. The first payment will be £301 for people on an eligible low-income benefit, to be paid during spring 2023 and then £150 for people on an eligible disability benefit, to be paid during summer 2023.

  • Energy Bill Support Scheme - £400 off energy bills for households in Great Britain from this October. This automatic, non-repayable discount will be applied in six instalments between October 2022 and March 2023 to help households through winter. There is no need to apply for the scheme, and you will not be asked for your bank details.

The Government has launched a new central place to find out what support you can get today.

Water Bill Support

If you're struggling to pay your water bills and haven’t got a water meter, check whether installing one will save you money. Many water companies, as well as the Consumer Council for Water have water usage calculators on their websites to help you work out how much you are likely to pay if you have a meter.  You might be able to spread payments over a longer period through a payment plan, as water companies accept a variety of payment methods. Many water companies run hardship schemes or fund independent charitable trusts to help you pay your bills
