PA Housing and our customers are in line for two awards being presented this week.

Resident volunteer Diana Charman, has been shortlisted for Woman of the Year in the Women in Housing Awards 2019, and our Universal Credit Hub has been shortlisted in the Welfare Wise category of the 24Housing Awards.

Winners of both will be announced on Thursday (October 10) night. The Women in Housing Awards presentation night will take place at Old Trafford in Manchester and the 24housing Awards ceremony is at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

Diana has been a PA Housing resident for a few decades and through her involvement, she has achieved many positive outcomes in her community. She had led the revival of the residents’ committee to improve the estate where she lives at Fulmer Close in Hampton.

She has explored creative ways to support community involvement, open up the community hub, and address antisocial behaviour and parking issues. She has identified a need to address the social isolation of older people and has been involved in many projects that tackle the issue. And she has poured expertise, passion and collaboration into maintaining green spaces for everyone’s benefit, including the community allotment.

The four-strong team behind our UC Hub spare no effort to deliver brilliant, life-changing results for our customers who move onto Universal Credit. Since it launched in October 2018 the hub has helped 874 of 1,216 new claimants and obtained £161k additional benefits such as PIP and Discretionary Housing Payments. Securing extra income for them has directly avoided 20 evictions.

The team offers support from the earliest stages: explaining difficult terms; demonstrating how the journal works; setting up bank accounts if necessary; helping people to get an email address, and signposting to debt advice. We have become experts in our field and our expertise is shared with the government, charities, local authorities and other housing associations.
