Celebrating the Big Dig!

2019 - April, Latest news

On Saturday 27 April we celebrated The Big Dig – a national day that celebrates getting more people involved in food growing by having a community planting day at Island Farm Road (Molesey, Surrey).

Despite the cold wind and rain, local people turned up to support with weeding, digging, planting (fruit bushes, herbs and vegetables), making sunflower seed paper pots and painting garden themed ceramics. All of the hard work was rewarded with well deserved sandwiches, cakes and hot drinks!

Over the last 2.5 years it has been a genuine pleasure to work and build collaborative relations with local residents on this green space project. The day was also a group celebration of how far we've come – I've worked with the steering group, contractors and colleagues on activities to install a noticeboard, a new accessible pathway and railings as well as to oil and plant the raised beds.

The last stages of the project are underway with plans to plant a small wildflower meadow and dwarf fruit trees, as well as install a permanent water access solution.

This project has truly become community led, with residents working both with eachother and PA to make decisions about the site's design and the project's donations and funding. When the structure of the site is complete this summer, the project will be handed to the community to manage it going forward, with ad hoc support from PA Housing.

Thank you to Anne Hallett and Chris Jones for getting involved at the community day and supporting resident involvement.

Some of the residents have fed back to say:

It was a fun morning! And we got it all done. Nice to see new people there too
